Thailand's rights picture is one of real, accelerating progress against a backdrop of remaining gaps — a country that has moved from quiet tolerance toward active legal equality, with important work still ahead.

The progress

• Marriage equality (effective January 2025): the landmark — full legal marriage for same-sex couples, a first for Southeast Asia (more);
• Anti-discrimination groundwork: Thailand's gender-equality legislation has included protections addressing discrimination on the basis of gender expression — a legal foothold advocates build on;

The gaps advocates focus on
